wprogramwasinterdisciplinary.Allowedyoutoteak.Coursesacrossarangeofdepartmentsoinfactthebasicstudiesincludedahistoryofwesternthoughtandwesterncivilizationhistoryofsciencehistoryofliterature.AndsincethenyouwouldgoonandspecializingyoucaneithertakeatimeperiodwhichIdidsoIgottostudy--inGreekplaysinGreekhistoryinitwasreallyafascinatingabilitytosay.Howdidpeopleatthattimeperiodthinkabout.LifedemocracyyouknoweverythinggoesbacktotheGreekssinceitwasagoodfoundationformeIusedtobeabletoreadGreekIcannotanymore--that.Butyougottogetthebestprofessorsineachdepartmentactuallysowasalotof--asyou'redevelopingasayoungadulttellmewhatmatteredTUyouknowI'mgoingbacktothemlatesixtiesearly1970ssuchadifferentworld.Justsortofgivemeapictureofyourconvictionshereprofessionalgoalswhatyouthoughtyoumightwannadowithyourlifewhenyou'reincollege.GrowingupatatimeperiodthatIguesswewe'realittlebitaheadofwhatyoumightcallafeministrevolutionIgraduatedfromhighschoolin1971.Saidtherewasalotofthathappeningbutnotinmytalent.AndwhenIwenttocollegeaswewerethefirstwomento--hisfreshman.Ifoundthatmyideasaboutthingswerechallengedalittlebitistheyweremaleprofessorsinmalestudentssaidwhatarewomendoingherequestionsaboutwhat.RoleswomenplayyouknowIwasandacheerleader.AndIIdidn'tparticularlyplaysportsbutitbecameverycleartomethattherearecertainthingsthat.Mendidinwomencouldn'tandIquestionthatbecause.Someofthesethingsdidn'tmakesenseininaplacewhereIwasgonnagetaBAlikeeverybodyelse.Ithoughtshouldbeabletodoitotherpeopledoitwasaneyeopenerreallytoseehow.RulemodelsweregenderbaseanditwasaninterestingtimetoViennaacampusthatwasfullofverysmartpeople--alsoverytraditionalpeople.Andyouknowwedidalotofworkwithissuesaround.Sexeducationinwomen'shealthissuesforinstanceoftheschoolthat--thenallmaleandhassaiditwasreallymyconsciousnessraisingforthatservedmewellthatsaidlookthingsaren'tequalwomenaregonnahavetofightforsomeandhisbutIlearnedearlyontosortofIthinkfindanappropriatewaypickyourbattlesanditwasabouthavingchoicesitwasaboutbeingantimale--aboutmakingsurethewomenhadchoicesforjobsin.Livesin4happinessgoodmorningandwelcometoexceptionalwomenthewomanwhosevoiceyou'rehearingontheradioissowhenyoualsowillreadaboutthenewspapersandseeontelevisionquiteoften.SheistheattorneygeneralofMassachusettsMarthaCoakley.Andwe'vebeenlookingforwardtothisinterviewforsometimessothereyouareonthecampusofWilliamsCollege.TellmeaboutyourdecisiontogotolawschoolIalwaysthoughtaboutwhatIwoulddowhenIgrewupiswetalkedearlierI--radioIwrotefortheschoolnewspapersveryinterestedincommunicationsbutIalsoisthatit's--veryfrequentlyandwatchalotofPerryMasonasthrowingupinit--tomethatthoseweretwocareerswe're.Youknowfewergoodreporteryougotthestoryyoucoulddidyouknowaccomplishthingsinyourownmeritsbutlikewiseifyouwerealawyer.Andyouhadthattrainingandyouweresuccessfulinthecourtroomyoucouldachievewhatyoumightwantinyourcareerwithoutworryingabout--mightinbusinessinhavingamentorhaving.ThecorporatestructurethatIthinkisdifficultforwomentobreakintothatcertainlysuitedmytalentsIlikedtalkingandlikedarguingitwasprettygood.Onmyfeetdidn'thavegonetoCatholicschoolwedelightedbeatenspeechinmemorizingandallthoseskillsthatIthinkkidsdon'tgetnowwhatyouthink--toobadbecausetheyloseoutassoIhadagoodfriendwhoactuallywenttotheColumbiaschoolofjournalism.Iwenttolasgoaliestodebateaboutwhetherwewantedtomakethenewsorcoverthenews.AndIthinkyouknowfightreallygotolawschool--IcanhavethosetoolstobeanadvocateforsomethingsthatIcareabout--thatIthinkareimportant.Irememberseeingmagazinesintheearly1980sworthtalkingaboutfashionintheeighties.Whichofcoursewasacatastropheonmanymanylevelsbutparticularlyforwomeninbusinessintheearly1980sandI'mthinkingthisiswhenyouwerefirstinthecourtroom.Youknowwomenwearingtie--anddressinglikementellmewhatwastheroleinthecourtroomwhenyoufirstbecameanattorneybrooksBrotherssuititwasthefemaleversionwiththeabsolutelythebuttondowncollarinthenavybluesuitwiththeskirtmindyouknowyoucouldn'twearpantsyouhadtowearaskirtbutotherthanthatit--thefamineandtheversionofwhatmen--AndweallwearthoselittlebowtiesforawhileanditwaspartoftryingtoseeitinaninIthinkwehadtogothroughthatphasebecauseitwas.Okaywherewomenwecandothisjobtoosowehadtolookthepartthat'schangedobviouslyandthingshave.Developed--theirwomenhavedoneverywellbythewayintermsofgettingonwehavecomealongwaybaby--analytical--Ithinkitmadeabigdifferenceinkind--andaddresseschangedalso--thebeginningitwasreallyaquestionofnotstickingoutinthecourtroomnothingtooobvious--IgetachancetositacrossfromsingersallthetimeandIlovetoaskhimaboutthefirsttimethey've--themselvessingasongontheradiosoforyou.Iwouldlikeyoutodescribeyourveryfirstcase.AndhowdiditfeeldoesitfeellikeyesterdayoramillionyearsagowhereyoushakinginyourbootsIwanna--well--I'vestillshakenmybootsyouknowifyoueverlosethatfear--the--yourstomachwhenyougototrialbutit'stimetochangeyourcareerbecauseit'sstillalwaysafrighteningexperienceofcourseforawhileincivilpracticewhatIwoulddowouldbetosecondseatsomebodyIwouldgowithsomebodybeingcarriedthebag.SoIreallydidn'tgetanyofmyowncasesuntilIstarteddoingcriminalworkandIrememberinthe--districtcourthavingajuryimpaneledandthenhavingtogiveanopening.Itit'snotmyfirstcaserememberirisimagesone.EarlyonwhereyouknowwasaprosecuteyouhavetoputinalloftheelementsandIhadaadrunkdrivingcaseinthedefensecounselgotupattheendof--andwithaprosecuteddidn'tputinanyevidenceofopenwaymyheartsunkintoI'mgonnalosethiscaseevenbeforeitgetstothejury.SoIgetupandmadeanargumentandthejudgethoughtaboutitfinallyagreedthatitcould--editorsbutItellyouinmyheartwasinmymouthafterthatandIsaidohmygodhowcouldIhaveforgottenpublicwayfasciatheattorneygeneralandithasbeenquiteerodefromMartha--goodmorningthisismagicwhenasixpointseven--EOTerry.You'relisteningtoexceptionalwomen.Radioportraitsofwomenwhowillinspireyou.You'vetriedsomeveryhighprofilepubliccasesIrememberseeingyouonTVtheLouiseWoodward.TrialontheshakenbabycasethefellsAcrecasesomanyothers.HowdoyoustaycoolwheneverythingisswirlingallaroundyouIDtellthisstorywhenI'maskedthatquestionandIactuallysawthismovieaboutpeopleandunusualcareers.Andtherewasaguywhowasaliontameironywasaskedabout.Youknowyou'redoinghisjobandthere's50000peopleintheringand--doandhesaidmaninthe--it'sonly--a--worryabout.Andit'sreallyverytrueifyou'reincourtyou'vegottobefocusedonthejudgeonthejury.Youforgetaboutthecamerasbecauseyouhavetodo.Andyoureallyneedtofocusonthetwelvepeopleintheboxthatyou'retryingtoconvince.ThathasalwaysworkedformeandIthinkmostpeoplewhoareprofessionalsaboutitunderstandthatregardlessofhowmuchattentionyourcasegetsordoesn'tget.OncethattrialstartsyoufocusonthatlineanddoyouknowOmar.Todoyoufeelguiltorinnocencedoyoudevelopasixthsensewhenyoudothischarlatan.IthinkmostpeopleprobablyhavethatsensetobeginwithanasalawyerwhatyoudowesharpenyourskillsIdoubt.Makingthecase.Clearlyanyprosecutorhousetofeelthatthepersontheirchargingisguiltyheshouldbetakingthecaseifyoudon'tbuthavetoproveitinso.WhenyoustartfromthebasicOKwebelievebecausetheevidencetellsusinbecausewealsobelieve--forotherreasonsthispersonisguilty.Thenyoubuildthecase.Andsoyouknowwhatittakestoconvincesomebodywhomaybedoesn'thavetheexperienceofthefeelingontheinstinctyoudoandit'sgoodthatthesystemmakesusdoit.BeforewehadgrandjuriesthekingcouldpullsomebodyputthetheTowerofLondonandsay.--gonnachargedwithtreasonnowI'mnotgonnatellyouwhyarewouldbewiththewitnessesareagainstyouso.I'mveryproudofthesystemofjusticewehavethatmakesus--prosecutorsdoourjobwhat'stheevidenceandyouhavetoproveittotwelvepeoplebeyondareasonabledoubtthat'sextraordinary.What--passionplayinwhatyoudoIthinkitplaysalargeoneIthinkyouhavetocareaboutthisworkinyouhavetocareaboutboth.Thepeoplewhoyouarespeakingfour--wedon'trepresentedvictimstechnicallywerepresentedthestateinthesecases.Butyoucertainlyworkwithpeoplewhosefamilymembershavebeenmurderedherwhosechildrenhavebeenabusedandyouhavetohavesomesympathyforthenowhavingsaidthattherearecaseswhereyouknowwhatyoumaynotpersonallyclickwiththefamilyoryoudon'tnecessarilylikethevictimsortheir.Theydon'tunderstandwhatyou'redoingandtheydon'tthinkyou'redoingenoughforpeopletodothissuccessfullyhavetoalsobeveryprofessional.--tobeabletodrawthelinebetweenthecaseyouhavetomakedecisionssentencedseeingotherdecisionsbaseduponthecasethatyourepresentthecommonwealthnotbasedupon.AparticularreportwithaparticularfamilyyouknowyoujusttalkedaboutvictimsandhorriblecrimessoIneedtosayinthemiddleofareallybadtrialdoyougetmycarandhangyourheadsometimesinandneedtocryImeanit.Ihaven'treallydone.Youwill.Cryinthecarintheannualbeineffectiveinthecourtroomneedtobeable--separatedIdon'tthinkwehavethehardestjob.TheemergencyroomnursesandtherapistswhodealswithpeopleIthinkthatworkisequallydifficultyouknowwehaveacase.Wemakeanevaluationwetryitweenterintopleaandthenwemoveonandso.Wecaneitheryouknowsortofsaywe'vehadsuccessorwehaven'tbutthereareotherprofessionsaretherepeoplewhodealwithvictimsIthinkit'smuchharder.--becausetheydon'thavethekindofresolutionswedutycases.Butthoseofyoujustjoiningusgoodmorningyou'relisteningtoexceptionalwomenonmagicwonasixpointseventhisiscandyunitaryinthespotlight.MarthaCoakleyattorneygeneralfromMassachusetts.IlookatyouverybeautifulverypetitecharmingstillIthinkthegirlnextstore.TakemebacktoservingontheBostonorganizedcrimeunit.Andatthatstageinyourcareerdidyouhavetobeextratoughtogainrespectwellitis1987.AndI'veworkedforalittlebitoftimeintheDA'sofficeandIhadachancetogotoworkforthefederalgovernmentandyouknowthisisseriousstuffitwas--Investigations.NeedtoknowbasisscoresgrandmotherwasalwaysworriedaboutmewhenIstarteddoingthatandIsaiddon'tworrymomit'sthewitnessesnottolawyersthat.AtthatareatriskinsomeofhisbusinesswhichI'mfortunateonlytomakelightofitit'struenowevenininourstatecourtcasesthathe'she'savery.Dangerousanddifficultworldoutthereitwasaveryfocusedefforttolookatpeoplewhosebusinesswasbeingincrimeyouknowcrimefamiliesareotherstoo.Tookpayoffswereinvolvedingamblinganditwasveryinterestingis--different.ApproachfromwhatIdidbeforethatandwhatI'vedonesincebutitwasagoodpieceofmyeducation--frommakingacasefocusingworkingtwomonthsif--yearssometimes--acoupleofindividualsandsometimes--didn'tknowalways--offbecausethe
